The West Wing

The West Wing of the House of the Eternal Dawn is reserved for people placed under Dawnstrider protection following sexual assault, coercion and other violations of consent. For the pleasure and entertainment side of the estate, see The House of the Eternal Dawn – After Dark and The East Wing.

A Place of Protection

The West Wing exists for those whose ability to choose has already been taken from them.

While the eastern side of the House of the Eternal Dawn is associated with pleasure, intimacy and exploration, the western side provides protected accommodation and specialist care for victims of non-consensual sexual activity, coercive relationships and related abuse.

The people staying there are not customers of the House. They are under Dawnstrider protection.

Some arrive after being directly rescued by the Order. Others are brought from Dawnstrider-protected establishments, while a small number manage to ask for protection from within the House itself.

The West Wing is deliberately separated from the entertainment areas of the estate. Its purpose is safety, treatment and recovery, not exposure to the House's adult nightlife.

Asking for Protection

One discreet route into the West Wing exists through the House's Preference Forms & Ribbon System.

Preference forms are completed privately and individually, even when someone arrives with a spouse or long-term partner. Although this primarily prevents one person from influencing another's sexual boundaries, the privacy also gives someone trapped in a coercive relationship an opportunity to signal that they need Dawnstrider protection.

This function is not publicly advertised.

If someone uses the form to request protection, the House does not immediately confront the person accompanying them. Instead, a Dawnstrider is silently alerted and begins keeping watch.

The Dawnstrider follows discreetly and intervenes at the first clear indication of discomfort, coercion or unwanted intimacy. The person who requested help can then be removed from the situation and taken safely into the West Wing.

Whoever accompanied them is dealt with separately by the Dawnstriders. In many cases this means a direct conversation, a warning and being sent away from the House. More serious circumstances can result in considerably stronger intervention.

The secrecy surrounding this process is intentional. Someone controlling their partner is far less likely to agree to visit the House if they know the preference-form process can be used to place that person under protection.

Specialist Care

The West Wing maintains its own staff trained specifically for the kinds of injuries and complications its residents may arrive with.

This includes healers, medics and alchemists experienced in caring for victims of sexual assault and coercion.

Their work can include treating physical injuries, dealing with reproductive consequences, providing appropriate potions and other medical or alchemical care, and responding to substances or magical influences where these have been involved.

Not every victim requires the same care, and treatment is not approached as though there is a single standard response to what happened.

The purpose of the West Wing is to give people access to the help they actually need without forcing them back into situations where somebody else makes decisions about their body for them.

Protected Accommodation

Residents of the West Wing are kept apart from ordinary paying guests and the House's entertainment areas.

The wing provides private rooms where someone can rest without being approached by visitors looking for companionship or entertainment. Dawnstrider protection also means that people connected to whoever harmed them cannot simply walk into the wing looking for them.

The West Wing is not merely an infirmary. Some people may need medical treatment immediately, while others primarily need somewhere secure to stay after being removed from an unsafe situation.

The House is capable of providing both.

Dawnstrider Involvement

The West Wing works closely with the Dawnstrider Order.

Dawnstriders may be responsible for bringing someone to the wing, guarding them after a rescue, investigating the circumstances surrounding their abuse or dealing with the people responsible.

Their role within the West Wing itself, however, is primarily protective.

The resident does not need to become a Dawnstrider investigation simply because they accepted help. Care and immediate safety remain distinct from whatever action the Order may take elsewhere.

The House staff, specialist healers and Dawnstriders therefore serve different but overlapping roles around the wing.

Recovery and the Black Ribbon

Recovery does not require someone to become comfortable with sex again.

A resident may leave the West Wing without ever wanting to visit the pleasure side of the House, and there is no expectation that they should.

Others eventually become curious about returning to spaces associated with intimacy while remaining firmly in control of whether anyone interacts with them. For those who choose to do so, the black ribbon provides a way to enter the East Wing, Entertainment Room or other adult spaces without becoming available to others.

For someone recovering from non-consent, this can allow them to be around intimacy, performances or sexual spaces again without surrendering control over when and whether another person becomes part of that experience.

The decision to do so is entirely theirs.

The Other Side of the House

The East and West Wings represent two very different sides of the House of the Eternal Dawn.

The East Wing exists for people who want to explore pleasure.

The West Wing exists for people whose choice was ignored.

Both ultimately reflect the principle at the centre of Grov's House and the Dawnstrider Order: what happens to a person's body should remain their decision.
