Alignments
Overview
All beings on Eonil are believed to possess a certain alignment. While alignment often reveals itself through behavior and choices, there are also assumed alignments for specific types of creatures. Notably, all beings created or corrupted by Ghor are considered inherently evil; however, an individual merely touched by Ghor's corruption does not instantly become evil. The deeper the corruption, the more their alignment shifts towards evil. In contrast, most creatures of Eonil are regarded as neutral by nature, though there are exceptions—such as dragons, who, despite being creatures of Eonil, may also be considered good.
Misconceptions about alignments are common. For example, it is often claimed that all Night Dwellers or followers of Denday are evil, and that all followers of Quintra—even those in Quintra’s Onslaught—were good, albeit sometimes misguided. In reality, not all Night Dwellers are evil, and Quintra’s Onslaught were most certainly not always good.
The Alignment Grid
On Eonil, alignments generally follow the classic grid seen in many other worlds and games: a combination of Good, Neutral, and Evil, as well as Lawful, Neutral, and Chaotic. Most individuals and creatures fall somewhere within this spectrum, resulting in alignments such as Lawful Good, Chaotic Evil, or True Neutral.
- Lawful Good: Strives to do what is right, respects life, acts with honor and compassion within a moral code.
- Neutral Good: Does good for its own sake, unconcerned with rules or chaos, but values kindness and fairness.
- Chaotic Good: Acts as conscience directs, favoring freedom and individuality, but with a strong sense of compassion.
- Lawful Neutral: Follows rules, tradition, or a personal code above considerations of good or evil.
- True Neutral: Acts naturally, without prejudice or compulsion, and avoids extreme positions. Sometimes called "neutral neutral."
- Chaotic Neutral: Values freedom above all else, acting impulsively and unpredictably, neither especially good nor evil.
- Lawful Evil: Methodically takes what they want within the limits of a code or set of rules—can be calculating and merciless.
- Neutral Evil: Purely selfish, does whatever they can get away with, with no regard for rules or others.
- Chaotic Evil: Acts with arbitrary violence, seeking to destroy or harm with no regard for rules, order, or the lives of others.
Alignment Descriptions
Good
Good creatures respect all life and are willing to do what is right, even at personal cost. They often feel compelled to protect others, especially the innocent, sometimes sacrificing their own well-being for others’ sake.
Neutral
Neutral beings are free from strong prejudice, moral or ethical compulsion. Some are simply self-interested, while others believe it is risky to act on moral or dogmatic views. True neutrals rarely get involved in conflicts between good and evil, preferring to stay out of disputes or even change sides as circumstances demand.
Evil
Evil creatures lack respect for life. They are willing to destroy or harm others for personal gain or simply out of malice, often with little to no remorse.
Lawful
Lawful creatures strictly obey the "laws" of their faith, group, or code, which may or may not match the legal system where they live. They are often honorable and dependable, but can be close-minded, inflexible, or self-righteous.
Chaotic
Chaotic beings value freedom and flexibility, acting on impulse or emotion. They dislike authority and restriction, often appearing irresponsible or unpredictable to others.
Misconceptions & Cultural Views
Alignments are sometimes used as labels or stereotypes. It is important to remember that not all members of a group share the same alignment, and that exceptions are common. Understanding alignment in Eonil requires looking past assumptions and seeing individuals as more than just their reputation or the group they belong to.
