Common Language

Overview

The Common language is the primary means of communication among the peoples of Eonil. It was originally taught by the twin goddesses Quintra and Denday, who wished for their creations to be able to speak with each other and with their creators. As Quintra and Denday were responsible for the creation of nearly all common races, this shared language allowed for widespread understanding and cooperation.

Origins and Teaching

The Common language was the only language directly taught by Quintra and Denday. While all of their subjects learned to speak it, only the more intelligent or trusted individuals were instructed in its written form. These select few were given the responsibility to pass on literacy to others.

Historical Spread and Decline

Evidence suggests that before the Age of Darkness, nearly everyone could read, write, and speak Common. However, during the Great War, priorities shifted: the ability to fight became more important than literacy, and the teaching of the written word declined.

Current Use and Literacy

In the present day, most people speak Common, but the ability to read and write is no longer universal. Literacy is typically passed down from literate parents or acquired through private tutors, which are accessible mainly to those who can afford them. Certain occupations—such as scribes, merchants, and officials—require reading and writing, but many fighters, farmers, or blacksmiths are not literate in Common.

In Summary

The Common language remains the cornerstone of communication across Eonil, though access to its written form now varies greatly depending on social status and education.
