Liches
Summary
Origins & Mythology
Liches are the result of dark rituals and bargains with Ghor, the god of corruption. When a warlock or necromancer completes the transformation, their soul is bound to a phylactery—a magical vessel that anchors their existence. As long as the phylactery remains intact, the lich cannot be truly destroyed. Some legendary liches have hidden multiple phylacteries, making them nearly impossible to kill.
Physical Characteristics
- Appearance: Skeletal or corpse-like, often draped in regal or arcane robes; eyes may glow with unholy light
- Build: Remains of their mortal form, preserved through necromancy
- Lifespan: Immortal, as long as their phylactery endures
- Distinct Features: Emaciated features, magical aura of cold or dread, presence often accompanied by a sense of death or decay
Culture & Society
- Habitat: Ancient crypts, hidden towers, ruins, or strongholds infused with dark magic
- Social Structure: Solitary by nature, though some may command legions of undead or act as dark lords over their own domains
- Traditions: Obsessed with accumulating magical power and forbidden knowledge; creation and protection of phylacteries is central to their existence
- Economy: No true economy; liches accumulate treasures, magical artifacts, and secrets to further their power
