Equarra’s College of Magic
“Knowledge belongs to all who can wield it wisely.”
Overview
Equarra’s College of Magic is one of the most respected arcane academies on the Xaverion Islands and the only openly multi-racial college of magic in the archipelago. Located on the neutral island of Andoran, it draws students from every major race and region who wish to study magic in a structured, scholarly environment.
The college was founded according to the belief that anyone with talent and discipline should have the chance to learn magic, regardless of race or origin. Its graduates can be found across the islands as court mages, researchers, ritualists, ward-setters, and teachers.
Location
Equarra’s College of Magic stands on the island of Andoran, west of Tanea and roughly in the centre of the Xaverion Islands.
Key nearby locations:
-
Andoran Harbor – the main city on Andoran’s southern coast and a major transport hub for neighbouring islands. The college uses the harbour as its primary point of arrival for students and visiting scholars.
-
Middleton – a small town within walking distance of the college, with a tavern, temple, and small market. Middleton largely exists to support the college’s needs and visitors who are not themselves students.
-
Clode Forest – east of Middleton and the college, covering much of the remaining island. It contains the ancient ruins of Leaferon and the Dawnspirit Labyrinth, both frequent subjects of magical and historical study (and cautionary tales) for students.
Founding & Vision
The college was founded by the elven mage Equarra Silverblade, who had already been studying magic for centuries.
-
Founding date:
-
Founder’s age at “present day” (Year 22):
-
Equarra is recorded as being 593 years old, with a long history of arcane research before establishing the college.
-
Equarra’s vision:
Everyone with magical talent deserves an equal chance to study,
and together we can learn more than any one people could alone.
From the beginning, the college has:
-
Accepted students of any race willing to abide by its rules.
-
Focused on broad, foundational magical theory before specialisation.
-
Encouraged research, experimentation, and responsible use of magic.
Admission & Tuition
Equarra’s College is not a charity, but it is also not restricted to nobility.
Entrance Process:
-
Prospective students undergo a test of magical affinity, serving as the entrance exam.
-
Those who show sufficient potential are offered a place.
Tuition:
-
Students pay a fee yearly, continuing until they graduate or drop out.
-
The fee is described as not exorbitant, but not cheap either:
-
affordable for many middle-class families,
-
but still a significant investment, often requiring support from patrons or sponsors.
-
Literacy:
-
Any student who cannot yet read and write the common language receives basic instruction in reading and writing before progressing.

Nearby Study Sites: Leaferon & Dawnspirit Labyrinth
Equarra’s College sits in striking range of some of Andoran’s most mysterious and dangerous places, often used as case studies in classes:
-
Leaferon (Ruins)
-
Ancient ruins deep in Clode Forest, believed to have been a fortress or small city.
-
Popular theory: it was once a Fairy and Pixie Court dating back to the First Era.
-
Looted long ago—likely during the Age of Darkness—but still studied for residual magic and history.
-
-
Dawnspirit Labyrinth
-
West of Leaferon, believed to have been one of its gardens.
-
Infested with Ghor minions: pixies, tricksters, and unnaturally large, corrupted insects.
-
Often referenced in classes like Magical Creatures, Magical Phenomenon, and Neutralising Dark Magic as an example of a site where field work is theoretically instructive but practically very dangerous.
-
These locations make Andoran an ideal base for a college focused on both theoretical and applied magic, though students are typically forbidden to venture there unsupervised.
Reputation in the Present Day (Year 22, Fifth Era)
By Year 22 of the Fifth Era, Equarra’s College of Magic is widely regarded as:
-
One of the best schools of magic in the Xaverion Islands.
-
The premier multi-racial arcane college, known for accepting students from many cultures.
-
A centre of serious research, particularly in:
-
magical theory,
-
runes and ritual structures,
-
magical creatures and phenomena,
-
and methods of neutralising dark magic.
-
While other traditions and private tutors still exist, Equarra’s College is the place most people think of when they say someone was “properly trained in magic.”
It stands as a symbol of what Equarra intended from the start:
a place where knowledge is shared, talent is honed, and magic is studied as both art and responsibility, not merely as a weapon or a gift to be used without understanding.
