Sirens

Summary

Sirens are the corrupted versions of merfolk. Typically they are female, though there are also male sirens. They live deep within the waters of Eonil and are counted among the most intelligent of sea creatures. Because they are the dominant species in the seas and exert control over them, Sirens are widely known as the guardians of the sea.

To this day, Ghor rules the sea, and Sirens are a major reason why: they are one of the primary forces maintaining Ghor’s hold over the waters of Eonil.

Origins & Mythology

Sirens began as merfolk, creatures originally tied to Eonil, but were corrupted by Ghor. As corrupted merfolk, they now belong among the creatures of Ghor, acting as sea-bound instruments of Ghor’s will.

The rise of the Sirens is remembered as a turning point in the history of the Xaverion Islands:

  • On Vicday, in the cycle of Arilya, during the season of Ysandra, year 14, the coastal city of Serinhal (Meriquy) was swallowed by the sea overnight. There were no survivors.
  • Two days later, Xaverion investigators and members of the Wanderers League determined that the disaster had been a deliberate attack, not a natural catastrophe.
  • When several ships were sent to investigate the waters around Meriquy, they were attacked by Sirens and other sea creatures. Only one ship returned; the rest sank.

This event made it clear that a new threat had arisen and that the seas had become the territory of Ghor, with Sirens at the forefront of that claim.

Physical Characteristics

Canon information about Sirens focuses more on their nature and role than detailed physical description. What is known:

  • Origin form: They are explicitly described as corrupted versions of merfolk, implying a merfolk-like body altered by Ghor’s influence.
  • Gender: Sirens are typically female, though male Sirens exist as well.
  • Habitat depth: They live deep within the waters of Eonil rather than lingering near the surface or coast.
  • Intelligence: They are counted among the most intelligent sea creatures, which is part of why they hold such effective control over the seas.

Beyond this, specific visual details (colouration, markings, etc.) are not yet fixed in canon and can be defined later as needed for art or story scenes.

Culture & Society

Habitat & Territory

  • Sirens dwell deep in the oceans of Eonil, and their presence is strongest in the waters surrounding the Xaverion Islands.
  • They are regarded as the dominant species of the sea, to the point that the seas are effectively considered Ghor’s domain.

Role as Guardians of the Sea

Because of their intelligence and power, Sirens are known as the guardians of the sea:

  • They are seen as controlling the waters and acting as enforcers of Ghor’s influence there.
  • Their attacks are not random: they target ships, harbours, and coastal areas, helping to maintain the constant threat that keeps travel by sea dangerous.

Relationship with Ghor & Other Forces

  • Sirens serve as an extension of Ghor’s corruption in the seas, much the way other corrupted creatures serve Ghor on land.
  • Their rise forced the Seafarers Accords to evolve from a contract-based policing force into a more organised navy, dedicated not only to law and anti-piracy operations but also to pushing back the Siren threat.

Even in the present day, attacks from the water in city harbours are still said to occur, a constant reminder of Sirens and other Ghor-touched sea creatures.

Subraces & Variants

Current canon does not define formal subraces or types of Sirens.

Known variations are limited to:

  • Gender – Sirens are “typically female,” but male Sirens exist.

Beyond that, records speak of Sirens as a single corrupted people rather than multiple distinct sub-groups. Any further distinctions can be added later if you decide to formalise different Siren types.

Notable Facts

  • Corrupted Merfolk:
    • Sirens are explicitly described as corrupted versions of merfolk, marking them as an example of Ghor twisting one of Eonil’s original sea races.
  • Guardians of the Sea:
    • They are called guardians of the sea because they are the dominant, highly intelligent species in the oceans and exert effective control over them.
  • The Fall of Serinhal (Year 14):
    • Sirens were responsible for the destruction of Serinhal, a coastal city on Meriquy that was swallowed by the sea overnight. Follow-up investigations and later ship attacks revealed Sirens and other sea creatures were behind the event.
  • Seas as Ghor’s Territory:
    • Since their rise, the seas are recognised as Ghor’s territory, and Sirens play a major role in maintaining that dangerous status quo.
  • Harbour Attacks:
    • Even in the present Fifth Era, attacks from the sea in city harbours still occur, reinforcing that the Siren threat is ongoing rather than historical.
