The city of silence
The City of Silence
The City of Silence was the shared resting place of the mummified remains of priests and paladins of Quintra and Denday. In the time when Quintra and Denday still walked the face of Eonil, most common folk were buried after death. Priests and paladins of Quintra and Denday were treated differently and were mummified after their passing.
The actual location of the City of Silence is lost in time.
Orders of Quintra and Denday
It is believed that the followers of Quintra and Denday each had their own order to take care of the dead, with their own preferences and practices. These orders shared the City of Silence as a final resting place for their mummies. The orders were responsible for the selection, preparation, and burial of the dead.
Quintra’s Order favoured gold, radiant motifs, sun-glyphs, and often interred their dead with offerings of light, warmth, and justice.
Denday’s Order preferred silver, blue, and violet hues, with moon-symbols, offerings of wisdom, dreams, and tokens of night and water.
Ritual Differences
The mummification rites, prayers, and tomb designs of the two orders differed, reflecting each goddess’s domains and values. Quintra’s tombs were often airy, with shafts for sunlight. Denday’s tombs were cool and shadowed, sometimes lined with shallow reflecting pools or lunar crystals.
A Divided Sanctuary
The City of Silence was a place of dual reverence, divided into the Halls of Radiance and the Vaults of Midnight. Here, the mummified priests and paladin of Quintra and Denday rested in splendour.
Though each order maintained its own rites and customs, both were united in purpose. Even in death, day and night were kept separate but honoured within the same sacred resting place.
The Halls of Radiance
The Halls of Radiance belonged to Quintra. They were described as sun-drenched courts, with golden statuary and open chapels. The chosen of Quintra rested there in sarcophagi shaped like blazing suns or heroic figures.
The Vaults of Midnight
The Vaults of Midnight belonged to Denday. They were quiet halls lit by cold blue gems, with silvered reliefs of the moon and stars. Denday’s priests and paladin were interred there in serene, dreamlike splendour.
The Hall of Balance
At the heart of the necropolis, there might have been a great shared chamber known as the Hall of Balance. This chamber may have been where rituals of concord were performed, and where the eldest or most revered priests of both faiths rested side by side, symbolising their unity against chaos.
Modern Legacy
Ruins and relics from each order can be distinguished by their motifs and inscriptions. The Silent Vigil still recognises and preserves these old distinctions, honouring the separate rites even as they guard all mummies.
Occasional tension or rivalry lingers between those who are descendants or spiritual inheritors of each order, especially regarding the true centre or most sacred parts of the City of Silence.
